The sheep pigThe sheep pig

Four weeks to go until baby is born, I have got to the totally board point with not being able to do anything.

I have been trying to keep myself active but it is now totally getting to be. Here are some of the things i have harvested from the garden and made by knitting.

Yesterday I pick 6 bags of carrots , sliced (2 servicing a bag) about 9 beetroots and 2 Cauliflowers, I have harvested some potatoes but not great amount a little disappointing.

This is my sheep with removable celtic jumper, I might make some more cloths for him if i can think of anything that is easy for me to design

Am a bit limited with my cooking as i am unsure want to do with beetroot unless you cook and pickle it.

Made 3 batches of it now and also a jar of it that hubby wanted to give to a neighbour lol.

I am going to leave the beetroots and the carrots for a week or two to grow up as i think i have exhausted the sizeable one at the moment. but plenty left. beetroots 3 rows left and Carrots 2 rows left but i also added some spring onions to one of the empty carrot rows :)

Am really enjoying growing veg this year, but finding it a bit difficult with bump.

While it was raining today i picked some carrots and a few peas and a beetroot. They were quickly picked, chopped up and placed in the freezer quickly (they wont be in there long ). The beetroot is weighting to be boil and then pickled in the the kilnar jar with the rest of them.

Have been harvesting the lollo rosa that has been sitting on the window sill (might sow some more to cut and come again).

Also harvested some of the mix green salad leaves set that has been sown outside

Too Hot

Is it possible to be too hot in Scotland ?

Yes it can be, It’s only July 1st and am waking around the house /garden /town in cut off shorts and short sleeved T-shirts am finding it super hot due to only 12 week to do until my due date !!!!!

This afternoon about 3.00 it cool right down to popped in to the garden and planted a couple of plants that where in dire need to go in the ground. Just after that, we had a sprinkling of rains and now it has got even hotter that it was before.

I am currently sitting in the living room watching the Tennis with the ceiling fan on and not getting much cool air from it at all.

My parents are visiting this week to and also finding the weather to much for them. We don’t have much planned for this week as they are really using our house as a get away from their newly expanded business for a wee holiday.

We where planning to have a BBQ today but as it was raining i made it in doors

Burgers/sausages/BBQ flavour chicken wings/salad and chips yum yum

Went for a walk along the ‘old road’ and picked a big bag of Elderflower and started a batch of elderflower cordial, It’ll be ready (hopefully ) tomorrow I’ll just have to wait and see what happens

20 mins, plus overnight infusing
Cook time:

Makes 1.5 litres

Sophie Grigson captures the essence of warm English summers with this refreshing and versatile elderflower cordial

Tips and suggestions
Cooks Tips…
To serve Elderflower Cordial: Dilute the elderflower cordial to taste with fizzy water, and serve over ice with a slice or two of lemon, or a sprig of mint floating on top.

For something a touch more sprightly, add a shot of gin or vodka and a lemon slice, or add it to white wine and sparkling water to make an elderflower spritzer.

Elderflower cordial is also brilliant in recipes such as gooseberry fool, and in vinaigrette – mix with wine vinegar, a touch of mustard, salt, pepper and a light olive oil (surprisingly good with a courgette, lettuce and broad bean salad). You might even try adding it to a marinade for chicken breasts. Try it in sorbets, or ice-creams, or just spooned over scoops of vanilla ice-cream, or use it to sweeten and flavour the fruit for a crumble.

Ingredients
  • 20 heads of elderflower
  • 1.8kg granulated sugar, or caster sugar
  • 1.2 litres water
  • 2 unwaxed Lemons
  • 75g citric acid
Method

1. Shake the elderflowers to expel any lingering insects, and then place in a large bowl.

2. Put the sugar into a pan with the water and bring up to the boil, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.

3. While the sugar syrup is heating, pare the zest of the lemons off in wide strips and toss into the bowl with the elderflowers. Slice the lemons, discard the ends, and add the slices to the bowl. Pour over the boiling syrup, and then stir in the citric acid. Cover with a cloth and then leave at room temperature for 24 hours.

4. Next day, strain the cordial through a sieve lined with muslin (or a new j-cloth rinsed out in boiling water), and pour into thoroughly cleaned glass or plastic bottles. Screw on the lids and pop into the cupboard ready to use.

Harvested veg

Hiya all,

Jobs i have done today included harvesting a couple of board bean pods, a few Carrots, raddishes, and some snap peas.

I have cleaned up and prepared the veg. I have chopped up the carrots and put them and the pea’s in to the freezer.

Recently finished one half of a loom knitted Wrist Warmers

:) , I would think you could wear them anytime they are not supper thick so possible like evening walks. It not that hot here in scotland at the moment but had the Odd spell of heat and sunshine.

Almost finished the second one of the gloves, just taking it off the loom.
have finished them both now :)

Quite easy to wear for gardening jobs too.
A little loose for me but might alter the project if i do it again, with either a double strand or make it ribbed instead of plan knitting

the lovely wool came from http://freyalyn.blogspot.com/ at Wonderwool 2009

This has totally been a pain in the bum, I totally lost the plot with this but i have finally finished it today :)

I was counting down the rows :)

I have harvested some of the pea pods today as residence was futile lol

I planted the peas on the 21st March

Beans !

I have notices about 3 seedling of runner beans popping up today from the planting on the 24th May

Planted out the seed potatoes i got from freecycle (I mentioned it yesterday) I need to plant out the cabbages and courgette i got too.

Also needing to plant out is the sweetcorn and squash seedlings.

Today i collected a bag of seed potatoes and a pot of cabbages or Brussel sprouts lables mix up( I am not sure they look a bit legy for cabbages but have been grown very closes together so i am unsure ) I also have a pot with a courgette plant in it.

Hubbies grass seeds have started to show, he was getting a bit worried that the grass seeds had got to old , we where watering it everyday but go fed up with it so left it and the weather was really hot then really wet and i think this must have encouraged the seeds to grow.

Was at the Central fife and west show yesterday and got some Brussels Sprouts and a couple of plants of cabbage, Also got a plant/flower which at the moment I am not sure what it is

Tam painted the border he created yesterday, I planted the Marigolds in-between the broad beans , peas and French beans . Planted a tub of turnips up the variety are  Snowballs , Purple top Milan, Saxion Top , Aramis .

All the tomatoes have started showing willing, the ones in the irrigation tubs started to flower so i nipped the flowers out and they have had a growth spurt simila to the ones in the plastic greenhouse . Many of the Potatoes in the sack and pots have started to flower. They real need to be topped up again.

Planted the Rockery plants, moved the gojy bush to a bigger pot. Placed the two larger Tomatoes (gardener delight) in to two compost bags (on the side, one to a bag).

Noticed that some of the Original squash plant have started to germinate

The asparagus peas has sown up with their first set of leaves . Some of the pea have started to put out some of their pods

Planting out French beans and Dwarf French Beans.

Hubby has set up the border along the fence line. We have also placed down plastic /weeding sheet down to help keep the front garden tidy.

Also weeded the front potato patch from last year which I didn’t get time to dig up the potatoes have started the sprout up for the 2nd year so I’ll have to get hubby to dig them when the time right, Spent some times looking around for some cheap bark but no luck.

Some photos of local areas

had a day on Sherifmuir mountain and took a couple of photos.

The view you can see is of the Wallace monument and also of Stirling castle amongst other things

Today planted up two packets of lettuce lollo rossa. Contructed a plastic greenhouse put it out an dpalced one of the trays of lettuce on it unfortuanly the wind didn’t like the new plastic greenhouse and seed tray and toppled it over. Soo I picked it up and put it back together  and placed the two trays back in it and weighted it down. Also attached two bungy to hold it on to the other solid greenhouse  also planted up 2 packets (about 11 seeds )of Squash seeds  also placed in greenhouse.

Bought two 6 meter soaker hose’s from poundland . Have set one around the raised bed that has the veg in it at the moment. Set a timer on for the hose and ran it for 15mins. Once i set up veg in the other bed. I set the other hose on that one. Where possible I am gona try watering the raised bed ever night for 15 min, some time in the evening around 5.00pm in the evening

While hubby and little t cut the grass i ‘earthed’ up the potatoes in the potatoes pots and sacks. I took 4 wheelbarrow to fill them up.

Today in between the heavy rain showers. I managed to plant up a row of carrots early Nantes and two rows of beetroots Boltary also planted out in a pot 3 Ptilotus Joey (3 plants) , These plants where a free plant over that came with goji berries and the Tomatoes irrigation system, I have no idea what these plant looks like. Also drilled some holes in to a bucket that had been forgotten and has started to fill up with water which isn’t a good idea as I have planted with tubers.

Back from the hols to come back to a total jungle the grass in the garden is about 2 foot tall!

Many of the sown seeds have started to germinate and sow there little leaves, the potatoes in the tubs and pots and sack are show their greenleaves and are needing to be filled in again (waitting for a nice day where tam can help me as the soil is getting to heavy for me to life at the moment).

Also put the plants and seedling that where in the kitchen, outside waiting to be planted up.

Planted 2 tubs of potatoes majestic about 10 tubers in all (Big pots) (120 days to mature) also planted in tubs 4 plants (2 tubs) of Jerusalem Artichokes. (cut down stem to about 30cm once leaves turn brown in Autumn lift as required in October to early spring).
Also planted today a horseraddish (Harvest roots in October / Nov when the leaves have dried and turned yellow, Don’t forget to replant so the roots for the next season), Store in a cool, dry and airy place. Last of the tubers and things to be planted up, Set up and put outside the tomatoes irrigation system with the water in the tub and some feed and also two tomatoes in the pots (one plant a pot).

Planted up two tubs of Desiree potatoes 5 tubes in a ll (last of the Desiree tubers)

Noticed more carrots poking up out of the soil . Took the carrots seed from the container in the greenhouse and placed them on one of the raised bed. I made a row next to the last row out of carrots and out them in the ground (not expecting much to happen with these fellas).

Also had a little weed in the corner (ground elder) where the fruit trees/ bushes are and the comfrey is. It look a lot better now. Must plant the rest of the tree and bushes up soon as am sure they are fed up being in the pot.

Had a we look at the veg seeds and noticed a few carrots seedlings are poking up throught the soil, didn’t notice anything else showing.

I havn’t been doing much in ways of gardening but Tam has created the 4 beds in to 2 beds and removed bed which is nolonger in uses. Seeds in the greenhouse are Peas, beans, shallots , Tomatoes.I planted (soaked before hand) a mix of sweetpeas, I tried to plant courgette but I havn’t noticed any sproutting yet. Brussel Sprouts , Only notice on that has popped up yet. A couple of  batches of cress, planted in youghurt pots on a medium of cotton wool pads(not put back on the window sill).Along with the cress i have parsley, mint and thyme. I have planted up some carrots in a pot for two things realy that to see what batches of carrots are still viable for the outdoor plantting,  And also some small salad carrots. On the Salad note i tried to some mix salad leafs but they didn’t take to good. I might need to plant some more of the variety i mentioned before as they didn’t progress to good.

Last year i mentioned about Comfrey plants can be seen here http://fluffywelshsheep.wordpress.com/2008/05/17/plants-are-you-ready/ not sure if they have survived over winter as they havn’t appear yet but still might be a bit too cold for them still.

Well i was stripping the leaves from them to make a comfrey soup for the plants which i put in to a small sealable pot, which i have now put them on the fruit bushes around the plot.

Back in january

I started some seed for the growing season,

I have been looking at them now for over a month most of them as Germinated but two lots haven’t, that being the carrots and some of the lettuce (the other lots of lettuce is doing great gun).

So today i have re sown a different variaty of carrots and another variaty of Lettuce
The being carrot F1 Parano (if these germinate i’ll put a patch outside aswell) and a variaty of lettuce called iceberg

For the ones that have grow is way to early to get them in the ground ,but they are all currently happy sitting on the table in the kitchen searching out the light and occasionally getting a stray of water.

as the weather hasn’t be great to go out in the garden (OK but way to cold) to do any gardening. So have been decuttering the house from stuff that has been sitting around and not touch for a long time.
a pile of book, an old fish tank that was a bit broken, a free standing pedastool fan plus a load of other random stuff, I   have put them all on to freecycle and the pile is slowly decreasing. The stuff that doesn’t go will be taken to the tip within a week . I think i mightstartting calling it Mt freecycle.
